The Portland Foxes came into existence in June 2008 as the much anticipated IGNHL came to fruition. During their inaugural season in 2008-09, the Foxes saw some devastating injuries to key players and underwhelming performances by others. Changes were bound to be made and no one was safe, including top pick Sidney Crosby who was moved to the Seattle Spectres for a lucrative package. The Foxes also made trades to solidify from the net out, acquiring Cristobal Huet and Nicklas Lidstrom, while attempting to maintain depth at forward. There were some bright spots however, as unheralded players stepped up and helped the Foxes to a 5th place finish, in what their rookie GM described as an "up and down" season. Also of note were the shrewd signings of up and comers Joe Colborne, Jamie Benn and Jonathan Blum, strengthening their already impressive prospect pool in Wyoming.
